Tutor helping struggling child with math and science
Being adept at math is not just an important skill in terms of securing good academic performance, it’s also very useful in everyday life. Unfortunately, not all children naturally love math. Luckily, there are some things you can do to promote a love of math in your child. Today, The Tutoring Center in Bear have a few suggestions on how to do just that.

Set an example

Children are known to mimic a lot of their parents’ behaviour, whether they intend to or not. Make sure you approach math problems with confidence and a positive attitude and your child is likely to do the same. Similarly, avoid complaints about math problems being too difficult for you, or claiming to be ‘bad at math’ or similar, as this will make math seem daunting and unpleasant.

Sneak math into everyday life

Sheets of math problems aren’t every child’s idea of a good time, but luckily there are other ways of introducing the use of math into their day. Ask them for help with measurements when cooking a meal, ask them to help you calculate the cost of the groceries, or perhaps you could ask them how long they need to save up their allowance to be able to afford a particular toy. Anything that gets their math muscles working!

Make it fun

There are hundreds if not thousands of applications available for tablets and smartphones that can make learning math (and many other things) a little more fun that poring through textbooks, so take advantage of these. You can also try some more ‘old-fashioned’ games that include math such as Monopoly, or adapt other board games to include math questions. Adapting games yourself is great because you can tailor them to fit with exactly what your child needs to study.

Another way to make good use of extra time over the holidays is to engage in some creative activities with your child.
