Tutor helping struggling child with math and science
Usually, when kids think about homework, they think of the exact opposite of fun... but it doesn’t have to be that way! We’re enlisting some of the most effective tips to make homework a fun activity for your kid.

1. First of all, you have to assign a quiet and comfortable place to do homework. Keep your kid away from distractions such as TV, video games, cell phone, computer, etc. Remind him that the sooner he finishes, the sooner he’s going to be able to play.

2. Don’t make homework look like a punishment. Expressions like “Go to your room and don’t come out until your homework in finished” are counterproductive.

3. Keep a bowl of healthy snacks and water or juice near him so he won’t be distracted by hunger or thirst while he’s working.

4. Let your kid use fun stationery, funky designs or the colours he likes while making his homework. It’s also fun and stimulating to make drawings related to the subject he’s studying.

5. Invent silly acronyms, rhymes or songs related to the subject he’s learning.

6. Make him pretend he’s the teacher, asking the students questions. He can use a dry-erase board and write the problems on there. You don’t necessarily have to be there all the time, he can teach to his toys, for example.

7. Play a “Do you want to be a millionaire” kind of game, using questions and answers, and give him a small prize if he does a good job. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive, a nice little detail, a hug or permission to go out or to play video games work just fine.

8. Take a 5-10 minute break each 30-45 minutes. Don’t get your kid burned out! During these breaks, TV and video games are still forbidden! Breaks are for grabbing some food and stretching legs, for example. NOTE: Remember elementary school kids shouldn’t do homework for more than 45 minutes a day.

Extra tip: Reading to your child is great for developing early learning skills. For homework in reading, read together or ask your child to read aloud to you. Make reading a habit since childhood.
